Chief Minister of the Northern Province, C.V. Vigneshwaran was admitted to the Jaffna hospital today (October 30) over a heart ailment, TNA sources told Ada Derana.

Sources claimed that the Chief Minister was admitted as a precautionary measure and is currently receiving treatment.

Businessman’s murder in Anamaduwa
A businessman has been stabbed with a pointed steel object and murdered in the Anamaduwa area last night.

Anamaduwa Police has arrested a youth allegedly involved in the murder, which had occurred at around 10.00pm yesterday, Ada Derana reporter said.

The victim has been identified as Dissanayake Mudiyanselage Ariyaratne, 53, a resident of Chilaw Road, Anamaduwa.

It has been uncovered that father of the suspect in question owns a shop which is located in close proximity to the victim’s business.

The suspect had visited the victim’s business place last night to inquire into a rumor the latter had spread regarding his father, that he smokes marijuana.

A conversation which had initially started in a friendly manner had quickly escalated out of control resulting in the youth stabbing the businessman with a pointed object.

 He was immediately rushed to the Anamaduwa Base Hospital, however succumbed to injuries shortly after.

Anamaduwa Police is conducting further investigations.




The Department of Meteorology today said that the severe cyclonic storm Phailin has entered into India and that its effect on Sri Lanka’s weather is “gradually decreasing”.

Final preparations are underway in India for Cyclone Phailin—now officially the strongest storm ever measured in the Indian Ocean.

Almost half a million people have fled the eastern Indian coast, many leaving just hours before the “super cyclone” hit the country.

The vast weather system – cyclone Phailin – was generating winds of up to 220km/h (136mph) and forcing huge waves far inland even before it struck the shores of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh states just after 9pm local time.

Aid and disaster management officials have estimated that up to 12 million people lie in its path.

Sri Lanka’s Met Department, however, forecasts several spells of showers in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea area around the island, it said.

Winds will be Southwesterly and speed will be 30-40 km/hr. The  sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil may be fairly rough at times as the winds can be strengthen up to 50kmph at times, the weather forecast predicts.

Thirty-Five (35) officials including education officials were ordered to be present before the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission for an inquiry into the releasing of Grade 5 Scholarship Examination results on World Children's Day.


A bus strike has been launched in the Soysapura - Mattakuliya route.
According to the bus owners, the 155 bus strike was launched today because the buses were not given permission to park the buses in the Soysapura Bus Stand.  The bus strike has been launched  from 1.30 p.m. onwards.
An individual sustained injuries when a firearm of a police officer went off by accident in the Nankadawara area in Dummalasuriya.
Acting Police Media Spokesperson, SSP Ajith Rohana says two police officers who were on duty on Monday night had attempted to file legal action against a group of individuals who had violated motor traffic rules, however an altercation broke out between the police officers and the group.
SSP Ajith Rohana says further, that a group of residents had then allegedly assaulted the two police officers.He notes that during the tense situation, the firearm of one of the police officers went off by accident, thereby injuring an individual.The injured individual was admitted to the Chilaw Hospital.

SSP Ajith Rohana adds that the two police officers who were assaulted are receiving treatment at the Kuliyapitiya Hospital.

The police have commenced further investigations into the incident.
