Chief Minister of the Northern Province, C.V. Vigneshwaran was admitted to the Jaffna hospital today (October 30) over a heart ailment, TNA sources told Ada Derana.

Sources claimed that the Chief Minister was admitted as a precautionary measure and is currently receiving treatment.

Businessman’s murder in Anamaduwa
A businessman has been stabbed with a pointed steel object and murdered in the Anamaduwa area last night.

Anamaduwa Police has arrested a youth allegedly involved in the murder, which had occurred at around 10.00pm yesterday, Ada Derana reporter said.

The victim has been identified as Dissanayake Mudiyanselage Ariyaratne, 53, a resident of Chilaw Road, Anamaduwa.

It has been uncovered that father of the suspect in question owns a shop which is located in close proximity to the victim’s business.

The suspect had visited the victim’s business place last night to inquire into a rumor the latter had spread regarding his father, that he smokes marijuana.

A conversation which had initially started in a friendly manner had quickly escalated out of control resulting in the youth stabbing the businessman with a pointed object.

 He was immediately rushed to the Anamaduwa Base Hospital, however succumbed to injuries shortly after.

Anamaduwa Police is conducting further investigations.




The Department of Meteorology today said that the severe cyclonic storm Phailin has entered into India and that its effect on Sri Lanka’s weather is “gradually decreasing”.

Final preparations are underway in India for Cyclone Phailin—now officially the strongest storm ever measured in the Indian Ocean.

Almost half a million people have fled the eastern Indian coast, many leaving just hours before the “super cyclone” hit the country.

The vast weather system – cyclone Phailin – was generating winds of up to 220km/h (136mph) and forcing huge waves far inland even before it struck the shores of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh states just after 9pm local time.

Aid and disaster management officials have estimated that up to 12 million people lie in its path.

Sri Lanka’s Met Department, however, forecasts several spells of showers in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea area around the island, it said.

Winds will be Southwesterly and speed will be 30-40 km/hr. The  sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil may be fairly rough at times as the winds can be strengthen up to 50kmph at times, the weather forecast predicts.

Thirty-Five (35) officials including education officials were ordered to be present before the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission for an inquiry into the releasing of Grade 5 Scholarship Examination results on World Children's Day.


A bus strike has been launched in the Soysapura - Mattakuliya route.
According to the bus owners, the 155 bus strike was launched today because the buses were not given permission to park the buses in the Soysapura Bus Stand.  The bus strike has been launched  from 1.30 p.m. onwards.
An individual sustained injuries when a firearm of a police officer went off by accident in the Nankadawara area in Dummalasuriya.
Acting Police Media Spokesperson, SSP Ajith Rohana says two police officers who were on duty on Monday night had attempted to file legal action against a group of individuals who had violated motor traffic rules, however an altercation broke out between the police officers and the group.
SSP Ajith Rohana says further, that a group of residents had then allegedly assaulted the two police officers.He notes that during the tense situation, the firearm of one of the police officers went off by accident, thereby injuring an individual.The injured individual was admitted to the Chilaw Hospital.

SSP Ajith Rohana adds that the two police officers who were assaulted are receiving treatment at the Kuliyapitiya Hospital.

The police have commenced further investigations into the incident.

Actress Kareena Kapoor, who married Saif Ali Khan on October 16 last year, is reportedly planning to celebrate her first wedding anniversary quietly on foreign shores.

A source close to the actress revealed Kareena is flying out of the country for a week.
"As of now Kareena is flying out of the country for a week for her first wedding anniversary. She will have a quiet celebration with her husband on her anniversary," said the source.

The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau stated that A 4.5 magnitude undersea tremor had been detected 400 kilometres east off the coast off Panama Ampara on Monday at noon.
The Disaster Management Centre stated that minor tremors were reported in several areas in the Hambantota District.

The Fort Magistrate today issued an arrest warrant for the Sathosa Chairman as he was not present in court for the inquiry over his failure to produce the CCTV footage on the fire at the Sathosa Building.
A major fire broke out in the Sathosa Building at Vauxhall Street in Slave Island on July 31.
An inquiry is going on to ascertain whether the fire at the Sathosa Secretariat Building was an act of arson or an accident.
The Fort Magistrate's Court issued an arrest warrant for the Sathosa Chairman for failing to appear before court with the CCTV evidence concerning a store fire.
Records indicate that forty children have received treatment for Leprosy at the Lady Ridgeway Children's Hospital so far this year.
Director General of the Lady Ridgeway Hospital Rathnasiri Hewage said that parents should remain vigilant in this regard.

Twenty-five persons were remanded on Sunday in connection with clashes that broke out during a protest march from Devinuwara, calling on Ranil Wickremesinghe to step down from the party leadership.

The suspects were produced before Matara Additional Magistrate Manjula Karunaratne today. The Magistrate had also ordered that the suspects be produced in an identification parade on Monday. Police say that fourteen supporters of UNP Parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera had turned themselves over via two lawyers.

The bodies of five persons who drowned after their boat capsized in the seas off Vanathavivu in Puttalam have been returned to their families following the postmortem examination.

Police say that none of the victims were wearing life jackets. The boat carrying a group of people on a sea excursion had capsized in seas coming under the purview of the Navy post in Palugahathurai. The Police say that the vessel was an ordinary fishing boat with a passenger capacity of four.

At least six people were killed and dozens injured at a show in Mexico when a modified pick-up known as a monster truck crashed into spectators. At least one child was said to be among the dead.
The monster truck - with tires said to be 1.5 meters (nearly 5ft) high - was reported to have ploughed into a stand. The vehicle was taking part in a demonstration at an annual air show attended by thousands in the northern city of Chihuahua on Saturday evening.


Two Deputy OIC's have been transferred with immediate effect.

Accordingly , the Deputy OIC of Puttalam, Kithsiri Ganegama has been appointed as the deputy OIC of Jaffna. The present Deputy OIC of Kurunegala, Sarath Kumara has been appointed as the Deputy OIC in charge of Puttalam and Kurunegala.
Meanwhile the Senior deputy OIC, Pujitha Jayasundara who was temporarily transferred to the Police Headquarters, has been re-appointed as the Senior Deputy OIC of the Eastern Province.
A ten year old girl has been killed in an accident in Elmalthota on the Galewela - Matale road when she was attempting to cross the road .

Indian Minister for External Affairs Salman Kurshid is due to arrive in the country tomorrow on an official visit.
Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs Karunathilaka Amunugama said that the Minister is due to hold discussions with President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
In addition he is also due to meet with his Sri Lankan counterpart, Professor G.L. Peris and Minister for Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa.  Several bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding are also due to be signed during this visit.
A physical altercation has taken place between two groups of activists belonging to the Ceylon Workers Congress and National Union of Workers in Bagawantalawa.
Police said that the altercation occurred as a result of an escalation of a dispute.Two persons have been injured in the altercation while three people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Following an SOS call, the Sri Lanka Navy ship Sagara has been dispatched to rescue a stalled vessel with 65 on board around 215km South West of Sri Lanka.
A drunk maid tried to stab her love rival to death, a Dubai court heard on Thursday.

DP, 28, from Nepal, and an accomplice sprayed chilli pepper into the eyes of NS, 32, from Sri Lanka, before dragging her to a stairwell and stabbing her in the head, chest and belly.

Prosecutors said that the attack on April 2 this year was motivated by revenge as the Nepalese woman blamed the Sri Lankan, also a maid, for “stealing” her boyfriend.

The Sri Lankan recalled meeting the Nepali at about 5.30pm outside the apartment building in Silicon Oasis where they both lived. The Nepali asked to use her phone but she refused and carried on walking.
Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe has refused to accept UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake’s resignation letter from his post as the party’s Chief Organizer for Kundasale electorate.

Attanayake handed in his resignation to UNP Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe last evening, citing the UNP’s loss in the Kundasale electorate of the Kandy District at the recent polls as the reason for the decision.

The UNP General Secretary had accepted the blame for the loss instead of allowing the Opposition Leader to take all the blame and therefore stepped down from the post in order to facilitate a younger politician from the party.
