Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Management and the Senior Vice President of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Mr Nimal Siripala de Silva warned that if the Tamil National Alliance goes beyond its vocal call for separatism the government has the proper medicine to thwart it.
He said the constitution of Sri Lanka is supreme and no one will be able to divide the country under the terms of this constitution.
The Minister made these comments addressing a media conference held at the SLFP Headquarters yesterday.
Minister de Silva said the government would take appropriate action at the correct time to protect the country’s unity and territorial integrity and prevent any division of the country and as such no one should entertain any fear about it.
He said that attempts were being made both in the North and South to win people’s votes by arousing their emotions and nothing could be done to prevent it. However, the people would take a correct decision if they are intelligent and foresee the sinister attempts being made against the country.
The Minister emphasized that the TNA election manifesto can be described as a beginning of a program aimed at dividing the country. The Minister also said that the attitude of the people brain washed for 30 years by the terrorists cannot be changed overnight and in time to come people will realize value of things being done by the government for the benefit of the people in the North and East.
He said that the people of the North who earlier considered the government as a demon had now started to understand its real face positively. The Minister said that the Northern Provincial Council election had offered the Sri Lanka Freedom Party an opportunity to stabilize its base in the North as well..
The General Secretary of the SLFP Mr. Maithripala Sirisena also addressed the media conference.
