The Government has decided to buy the local Soya-beans and Maize production at a fixed price from farmers, during the ongoing Yala harvesting period.
Accordingly, the Government will buy a kilogram of Soya-beans at 80 rupees during the period of 1st of September to 31st of October and at a price of 85 rupees from 1st of November and upwards. The latest decision by the Treasury comes as the island’s Soya-bean production during this years
Yala season is expected to hit 30,000 metric tons, a 94% growth compared to last year. In the meantime, the Government has also decided to purchase a kilogram of maize at a price of 32 to 35 rupees. The decision which was announced yesterday, has been taken after the Treasury officials held discussions with farmer societies and the traders.
